The Benefits of Gas Hot Water Systems

There’s nothing in life more enjoyable than a hot shower on a cold morning, and a gas hot water system can provide daily luxury!

Heat Water And Save On Energy Bills!

A gas hot water unit is a cost-effective and energy-efficient option suitable for almost any household. When compared to an electric hot water system, you could save almost one-third on your energy bills – depending on your individual circumstances at least.

There are a few big decisions to make with hot water, though, and we’re always ready to help. When considering which gas water heater is the best for your home, there are quite a few factors you need to think through, such as:

  • How many people will be using hot water?

  • When do you use hot water?

  • Does your dishwasher or washing machine use hot water?

  • Do you have water saving fixtures installed?

The best news is you never have to feel daunted by the decision. A quick call to our amazing customer service team will have you one step closer to a hot shower again!

Types of Gas Hot Water Units

There are two main types of gas hot water systems – the instantaneous or continuous flow system, and the storage model. They can run on mains natural gas, or more rarely, bottled LPG.

An instantaneous hot water system is a wall-mounted unit. The heating process occurs as the water moves through a heat exchanger and the internal pipes, and only as you turn on the hot tap. It’s ideal for a cost-effective supply of reliable hot water, perfect for smaller households or energy-conscious Australians. When compared to an electric storage tank, the energy consumption savings will be instantly noticeable.

Meanwhile, a gas storage heater takes up more room than a continuous flow system. But in some cases, it is more capable of accommodating hot water needs as it does provide more heat and a larger supply for bigger households. Once again it is an energy-efficient alternative to electric hot water systems, and worth considering if you have access to natural gas.

No matter the type or brand, the location or the task at hand, Ripple Plumbing has the experience to help. We’ll install all brands, including a range of manufacturers like Rheem, Rinnai and Bosch, perform regular services, assess any issues you have, and ensure your hot water system is performing at its peak.

FAQ

Got a question about gas-powered water heating? We've got the answer.

Are gas hot water systems cheaper than electric?

With electricity prices rising, gas as an alternative source of power is fast rising in popularity. It’s been estimated that 25% of your home’s power goes to your water heater, so gas is a more affordable option. Gas-powered hot water systems are more expensive upfront to purchase, but the savings quickly make up for it when compared to electric hot water systems. Over a year you will save roughly one-third of your energy bills expenses by making the switch from electric.

Why is my hot water unit not working?

The most common cause of no hot water from your gas hot water system is the pilot light going out. Many newer systems have a piezoelectric starter which will light the pilot light for you. Older systems, however, require manual lighting with a flame. he pilot light can go out because of a gas valve or supply, but the most likely cause is your thermocouple. Alternatively, you might have air in the gas line or low gas pressure. If your thermocouple or flame sensor is faulty, you will likely need these parts replaced. This component senses the presence of a flame, and in its absence, will prevent the gas valve from delivering gas to the water heater. If the gas burner or control valve is faulty, this is an even more complex replacement. Finally, if the gas burner is cracked or damaged, this usually requires a whole water heater replacement.

What are the common signs of a faulty unit?

Other than your gas hot water system just not giving you enough hot water, there are a few other things to look out for when your gas water heater has gone bad:

  • Rust on the tank or in your water

  • Leaks from the tank or pipe

  • Inconsistent hot water

  • Running out of hot water

  • Pilot light won’t stay on

  • Unusual noises

When you start to notice these, it’s a sign your gas-powered hot water system might be on the way out. If your system is fast approaching the 10-year mark, it might be time to start looking for a replacement.

Which gas heater is the best?

When considering which gas water heater best suits your home, there are quite a few factors you need to think through:

  • How many people will be using hot water?

  • When do you use hot water?

  • Does your dishwasher or washing machine use hot water?

  • Do you have water saving fixtures installed?

You’ll want to consider whether you’re after a storage unit or continuous flow hot water, whether you have a natural gas connection, how much space you have and much more. Beyond this, you may also want to look into gas-boosted solar water heaters as well! With so many factors to consider, making the right decision can be a bit daunting. The plumbers from Ripple Plumbing work with gas hot water heaters regularly and can help you find the best system for your home and family.

Common Gas Hot Water Issues

If well maintained, you can expect your gas hot water system to last 8-12 years. Some systems even live to be more than 20 years old! But during that lifetime there will be some common issues that pop up.

They can be monitored with regular maintenance, and you should give Ripple Plumbing a call if you notice any of the following:

  • Hot water has gone cold

  • Fluctuations in water temperature

  • Rusty water

  • Odd noises coming from your tank

  • A leaking or burst tank

  • Pilot light keeps going out

  • Gas bill going up for no good reason

Quality Hot Water Repairs

At Ripple Plumbing we can look after your continuous flow or storage tank system with general maintenance and emergency repairs. This allows you to always have access to reliable hot water, even if you call us out late at night.

However, sometimes it might just be the right time to make a change. While you might consider just replacing your old gas water heater with the same model, there is good reason to upgrade. New hot water system models are typically more efficient and so will save you money in the long run. They are more environmentally friendly, too.
